About Health Initiatives for Youth Hamilton

Our History

Elizabeth Bagshaw
(1881-1982)
Medical director of the first birth control clinic in Canada.

Health Initiatives for Youth Hamilton, formerly Planned Parenthood Society of Hamilton, has been in existence since 1932.  The organization was founded by Dr. Elizabeth Bagshaw who was concerned about the economic and physical effects on women who lived in poverty and experienced multiple pregnancies as a result of lack of knowledge about family planning. Over the years the programs and services have evolved in order to respond to the current community and social needs.

Since 2002, the organization has shifted its focus to the youth of our community. In addressing the particular needs of Hamilton's youth, we have developed a highly effective, multi-disciplinary team with expertise in adolescent physical and emotional development.
